Disruption Before Breakthrough: What If the Setback Is Part of Your Next Level?

Have you ever been really close to something you want — a new client, a business opportunity, a speaking opportunity, or a big personal goal — and suddenly, something goes wrong?

A technical issue.

An unexpected problem.

Something that makes you think:

“Why is this happening now?”

“Is this a sign that I should stop?”

I know how easy it is to see a setback as a sign that you’re on the wrong path.

But what if it’s not?

What If the Disruption Is Part of the Growth?

When we’re stepping into a new level, we often have to become a new version of ourselves.

A bigger goal may require more confidence.

More resilience.

A different way of making decisions.

A different way of responding when things don’t go according to plan.

I think of this as letting go of the old version of ourselves so we can step into who we are becoming.

So instead of asking:

“Should I stop?”

Ask yourself:

“Who do I want to be in this next stage of my life and business?”

And then:

“How would that person respond to this?”

Don’t Wish for Things to Be Easier

We all want things to go smoothly.

But think about building muscle. You need resistance to become stronger.

Business growth can be similar.

We cannot control every problem, unexpected change or difficult situation.

But we can become better at handling them.

So instead of wishing for things to be easier, ask:

“How can I become better at handling this?”

That shift changes the focus from the problem to your ability to respond.

Practise Your Future Self

Every disruption gives you a chance to practise a new response.

Instead of panicking, pause.

Instead of overthinking, look for the solution.

Instead of immediately assuming something is wrong, ask what you can learn from the situation.

Think about the person you want to become.

How would they handle this?

You don’t need to become that person overnight.

You just need to start practising their way of responding.

Strategy Alone Is Not Enough

Strategy is important.

You need a clear direction, a process and practical steps to grow your business.

But eventually, something unexpected will happen.

A client may change their mind. An opportunity may shift. A plan may not work.

And that’s when mindset matters.

Strategy alone is not enough.

You also need the confidence and resilience to keep moving when reality doesn’t follow the plan.

What If the Setback Is an Opportunity?

The next time something goes wrong while you’re working towards something important, pause before deciding what it means.

Ask:

“What is this situation asking me to practise?”

Maybe it’s confidence.

Maybe it’s resilience.

Maybe it’s learning to trust yourself.

Because growth isn’t about creating a business or a life where nothing ever goes wrong.

It’s about becoming the person who can keep moving when something does.

And sometimes, the disruption in front of you isn’t the end of the path.

It may be part of what prepares you for the next level.
