Marketing Strategies for Travel Professionals: How to attract the right customers to your travel business

You don’t need to reach everyone. You need to connect with the right people.

As I continue working with travel professionals, one thing I believe is essential to building a thriving business is understanding that marketing goes beyond promoting packages and destinations. It’s about helping the right people understand the value of what you offer and why it matters to them.

In this session of the Transformation Travel Podcast Series, I had the pleasure of welcoming Rebecca Maffeis, an award-winning travel industry leader and strategic advisor, to explore how travel professionals can market their businesses more intentionally and attract the right customers.

Our conversation highlighted an important shift in the travel industry: people are increasingly looking for meaningful, personalized experiences that connect with their interests, aspirations, and well-being. This creates an opportunity for travel professionals to rethink how they communicate their offerings.

1. Move Beyond Marketing to Everyone

One of the first steps toward effective marketing is gaining clarity about who you want to serve. Who are your ideal customers? What are they looking for? What matters most to them when choosing a travel experience? When you understand your audience, you can create messages that speak directly to their needs and desires. You don’t need to appeal to everyone. You need to help the right people recognize that what you offer is relevant to them.

2. Tell Stories That Connect With People

Rebecca shared the importance of storytelling in helping travel businesses stand out. Instead of focusing only on hotel details, destinations, and itineraries, we can bring experiences to life through stories that help people imagine what they might feel and discover. Share the moments that stayed with you, the experiences that made a difference, and the words your clients use to describe their journeys. These stories make your marketing more personal and help build trust. They also communicate your value beyond price, giving customers a reason to choose you for more than just the inclusions in a package.

3. Build Trust Through Meaningful Connections

Marketing doesn’t always have to begin with a sales pitch. Sometimes, the strongest opportunities come from relationships we’ve built over time. Rebecca shared her experience growing her professional presence on LinkedIn through genuine engagement, storytelling, and connecting with people beyond the travel industry. Whether through social media, networking, or your existing circle of connections, showing people who you are and what you stand for can open doors to meaningful conversations and new opportunities.

4. Stand Out Through What Makes You Unique

In a competitive market, having a distinctive offering can help the right customers find you. Rather than trying to offer everything to everyone, consider what makes your approach different. It could be a specialized travel experience, a particular audience you serve, or the personal perspective you bring to your work. As Rebecca explained, being more specific about what you offer can help people recognize its relevance to their needs, including when they search online or use AI tools to find travel professionals.

5. Turn Knowledge Into Action

At Travel Awakens, I believe the challenge isn’t always knowing what to do. It’s taking what we know and putting it into practice with confidence, consistency, and intention. You may already know you need to refine your messaging, tell better stories, or build stronger relationships. The next step is deciding where to begin. Review your current marketing efforts. Are you reaching the people you want to serve? Does your message communicate your value? Are you building trust before asking for a booking? You don’t need to change everything overnight. Start with one meaningful improvement and build from there.

Your Next Step Starts Here

My conversation with Rebecca reinforced something I believe deeply: building a thriving travel business isn’t about doing more marketing. It’s about making your marketing more meaningful.

When you understand your audience, communicate your value authentically, and build relationships rooted in trust, you create stronger foundations for sustainable growth. So, as you reflect on this final session of the Travel Awakens Podcast Series, I invite you to ask yourself:

What is one change you can make this week to help the right customers connect with your business?

Take that step. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep moving toward the business you envision.

Because at Travel Awakens, growth begins when knowledge becomes action. Travel awakens more than journeys. It awakens possibilities.
